Maximum Distances

Hey fellas,

A friend and I are having a friendly little debate. He says that a shotgun slug can travel a mile if shot at an angle. I say no way!!!! I've found some info. on the internet to support my claim, but haven't found info on all calibers. Do you guys know the maximum distance a shotgun slug will carry for a .410, .20, .16, and .12 gauge shotguns.

They may go over a mile as a 22 will go up to 1 1/2 mi and some slugs start out at higher fps. Don't know or have any info though.

Griz- .22's have different Ballistic Coefficients. Basically the slug is a big wind blocker. So, it will slow faster (very genera statment). The Energy vs. Velocity aspect is what makes the slug a beast...
If you have time - go to remington's HSOforum and do some reading - fun stuff to know. Check on a 30-06 with 110 grains vs 220 grainson velocity and energy at muzzle and then @ 300 yards.

Below is some measurements without the wind factor. Wind can add or take away up to 50+%.

1 mile = 5,280 feet

.30-30 Winchester 11,600 feet
.30-06 17,000 feet

Pistols

.38 Special 5,000 feet
9mm Luger 5,700 feet
.357 Magnum 7,100 feet

Shotguns
12-gauge

No. 8 shot 720 feet
No. 4 shot 910 feet
00 buck 1,830 feet
slug 2,450 feet

Thanks Duluth Guy...

Everything I have found said basically that a slug's maximum distance is somewhere between 800 and 900 yards, so that is right in tune with what you had as well.

No prob Hof!

The only way yu will shot that far is if you shoot at something sillioetted(sp). If that is the issue you always need to know what is behind the hill, etc...
