Carbon arrows

HI GUYS,sorry I didn't mean to cause such a big deal. I'm just interested in trying some new arrows for my bow. I still got smoke coming out of my ears after reading all the posts. I haven't had so much scientific information thrown at me since high school.

Thanks, Scotty smile.gif

A bow cannot store KE, KE can only be applied to an object in motion, of course the bow stores energy but it is not KE. Like I said before, two arrows of same length, Diameter and point but with differing weights can have the SAME KE but different MOMENTUM and different penetration, and like wise a lower KE arrow may indded penetrate more! KE does not represent penetration. A fired .22 long rifle bullet has more KE than 99.9% of arrows in flight, which has greater penetration? I could list many examples of how KE does not reflect terminal ballistics. KE is probably the most misused term in ballistics. An arrow with high KE that penetrates more than an arrow with lower KE pentrates more for reasons other than KE.

This is getting off the subject but the use of KE comes about from attempting to determine a minimum "power" to hunt a particular game animal. If I can have two arrows with equal KE but vastly different performance how can I say KE is important? The only valid use of KE that I can determine is: A heavier arrow (same dimensions) out of a traditional bow has greater KE and MOMENTUM than a Lighter arrow (same dimensions) out of the same bow thus the heavier arrow penetrates further. But I can say the opposite for a compound: the lighter arrow having more KE but less momentum penetrates less.

wastewater .. I will take the 10,000 truck at 0.1 fps vs the 1 lb walleye at 1000 fps if it is coming at me. I needed a laugh.. thank you.

I'm not getting into the debate here.. in the end its going to seem like we need a 400# bow shooting a cast iron arrow .50 thick to kill a deer.

FisherDave,
now is that a Mule Deer or Whitetail, what is the sex and weight of the deer, What state or country is it in, what's the relatively humidity, shooting from the ground or treestand, mechanicals or fixed blades, Easton IRON50's, GoldTip IRONIZER or IronExpress Ironator shafts...man, how am I supposed to calculate without all the information.....sheesh man!!!
He'p me!! I done slipped into the quagmire of too much information!

Scotty--Carbons are great. I shoot Cabela's Stalker Extremes and they are not too expensive and I haven't had a problem with them at all. Much better than aluminums as "carbons are either straight or broken". I shoot feathers mostly because I am tired of ripping vanes because my groups are too tight. Nuff said. Best of Luck!

Told you this was going to get ugly guys! Smallies, being sick's not your fault, your're an ME. ME=sick (my last eqn.).

I got a kick outta the tension breakers. Tombow...yes, your shirt will get wrinkled and Fisher Dave...where can I get my hands on one of those new fangled 400# bows?!

Wastewaterguru reiterated a previous point of mine. I don't want a pass thru (3-6" in the ground). I like my animal to run away with my arrow in it. Gives the blood and easy path out and usually inflicts more damage if they run. I shoot carbons because they're quiet, fast, and durable. No clanking, try to beat the animals reaction with speed, and no more bent arrows!

Scotty. Keep doing what you're doing. If you're making your own arrows you're likely dedicated to the sport. If you know your equipment you're doing it right. I've shot deer with overdrawn carbons and deer and black bear with full length 2219's tipped with 150 grain broadheads. The gear didn't do the work, I did...and "that's all she wrote"

I must be sick because I had a blast reading all these posts. You beat me to bringing out the equations Buckblaster. Ah what fun! Guess it's just the ME in me...or almost ME, I got a few more classes to go.

I personally shoot carbons because I have had less adjusting to do when switching from my field tips and being able to use fewer pins to cover the same range of distance.

Time to go fishing 'til fall rolls back around.
