Jiffy clutch issues

dhuth

Question

The past couple weeks, my auger has been needing a little extra downforce to cut well. It was fine with me until this weekend I believe the clutch went out. The power head runs fine but if I put any pressure on the bit it stops rotating, (slipping clutch?) What do I have to do to get this fixed? Is it an easy do it yourself job or would it be quicker and less painfull to take it in? I'd like to get this done ASAP (before this Friday). Entire clutch assembly or just the springs? Any help?!

The clutch either locks in or it doesn't, its technically not a clutch but who cares. It needs a certain amount of RPMs to make that lock. A carb out of adjustment is the most common reason for the lack of RPMs. Second would be an internal problem with the clutch.

I am guessing that the carb is fine since it idles fine and goes when I give it gas. It runs wide open and spins the bit a little but when I set it to the ice the power isn't being delivered to the bit (no torque) I can grab the bit with my hand and stop it at WOT. "clutch" or not, what do you recomend?

If you can grab the auger shaft at WOT and stop its rotation I'd say its in the gear case. Which could be a number of thing and of coarse clutch too. As I said earlier the clutch locks up and is not intended to give any slip like a normal clutch. If this had been slipping a little before(from not enough RPMs) it'll wear out it out. Take it apart, if your lucky a pin or key sheared off or its gummed up from old grease. It most likely need replacement parts. Your best bet would look up an authorized Jiffy repair center in your area.
