North End LOW

Recommended Posts

We are staying at Smith Camps for the first time and have never fished the far north reaches of LOW. We will be there for 4 days and we apparently have some hot tips for trout and walleye. Are there any decent areas for crappies on that end of the lake? We just got back from Nestor Falls and I know the Sioux Narrows area also but no experience that far north. I saw Hemlock’s latest photos and it got me thinking crappies. I hope the weather improves because last weekend was COLD and the fish didn’t cooperate with the high skies and cold temps.

Hemlock, how far are you from Smith’s? We may need gas, bait or whatever and I would like to meet you.

We are about a 15 minute ride by vehicle, maybe about the same if you came across the lake. I know Al Smith quite well...he should be able to get you on to the fish.

Crappies....well, they are tougher to come by here...Nestor Falls might be your closest, unless Al has a secret stash of them somewhere?

Stop on in for gas, licenses, bait, whatever. Ask for Duncan (my staff don't know my internet code names :-)

Roger that. We are leaving this afternoon and won't be up there until late. I didn't have much hope for crappies up that way but I thought I would check.

Nestor Falls was pretty slow last weekend but the high skies and cold temps shut everything down. At -35 Sunday morning we headed south and never dropped a line.

If we venture toward town, I will stop in and say hello.

Our advance scouting crew just left your store with 8 doz walleye and 4 doz trout minnows. I hope we have to come back for more after tomorrow. Nothing spells happiness like running out of bait!

We are north bound in about an hour and hope to be melting ice cubes by 8:00 tonight.

Well, I served up those minnows...I remember talking to some guys from MN and they got 8 doz. walleye minnows and 4 doz large...they are staying at Smith Camps. I should have asked them if they were with "Magnum Mike"

Let us know how you did, I'm sure you wont' get this until you are back.

You have some beutiful scenery in your area. The snowmobile trails are second to none. Your wardens are very nice gentlemen and there are PLENTY of them. The Smith's run a top notch operation and I hope to get back there as soon as the wife will let me. It was a great trip overall.

As far as the fishing, I think I either need to stick to walleyes & crappies or take some trout lessons...

We fished the Ptarmigan Bay area for trout. We actually tried several spots up to the Echo Bay area where we had to stop. What is a tribal card and how do you obtain one? Is the fishing better up there?

We didn't find any crappies on this trip but I did manage a limit of walleyes and a few dandy perch. My point was I didn't have much success with the trout. I should stick to the things I know...

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
