Fishing in Cozumel

Try Bone fishing on the sand flats north end of Island. If you go deep sea fishing be prepared for the high wind and heavy seas!

This is your best bet. I'm not sure the deep sea fishing is that great that time of year. I usually go to Cozumel anywhere from end of Jan- March and they usually say the deep sea picks up after March - April but you can definitely go to the North side and fish in the flats.

Jakebuds your rite about deep sea fishing. When I was out there in February everyone was throwing up. Although we did catch some small blue-fin tuna. You couldn't even drink a beer with out it spilling all over you. Finely told the captain to head in to calm water so we could enjoy ourselves. Bone fishing is the way to go!Use spinning gear or a fly rod.

If you want to go fishing they have all the gear you need. Even the flat fishing guides have spinning reels and other setups for you to use. You dont need to bring anything except sun tan lotion. When I went we left at 530AM so that might be something to take into consideration. They might have afternoon fishing too, but not 100% sure on that.

I dont off the top of my head. We were in these smaller boats and it was two guys to a boat as well as the captain. I want to say around $300 for a boat? I'll ask my buddy and see if he remembers and also what the guys name was.

I've been bonefishing in Cozumel and I'd highly recommend the expereince to anyone. My guide was ~$325 + tip. I've never figured the exact daily cost because we traded one of my rods for some of his fees. Shipping makes fishing supplies pretty expensive so many of the guides like to barter for new tackle and equipment. The bones are smaller than Bahamas, but the numbers are quite high. You may want to get a pair of flats boots to wear. Early morning when they are feeeding you will do quite a bit of spot and stalk fishing.

Highly recommend this guy Kid, Alex Euan. Mostly a fly rod guy, but he uses spinning tackle too. Hopefully the link below doesn't get deleted. If it does, just google his name & cozumel.

I caught some decent bonefish, small cuda and permit on the fly. It's fun to watch the fish fin in small groups. Be prepared, the water is ultra clear and your casts need to be around 40' once the sun comes up. I found that the lagoons are prone to periodic wind "gusts" that make long distance casting tricky.

Have fun and give us a run down when you get back.

I'm headed to Los Cabos this weekend! smile
