Boat landings and primitive public campgrounds Ontario?

Recommended Posts

Have fished Ontario between Kenora and Minaki for three years now. A friends dad has fished the same 2 lakes for over 30 years. We camp with them and have 10 kids between the 2 of us plus he brings a nephew with and I've been thinking about bringing a couple of mine with. They go way back in on a road that is a night mare at best. I've hunted in some nasty conditions out west but have never been stuck or like I call it temporality delayed like up on Canada's back roads. This year am pulling our samurai and putting a winch on the front of the suburban as well. Don't get to see this friend and his dad but for this trip most of the year. My dad just had a heart attack and will not be able to go this year. After hearing that the friend told me he keeps wondering when he's going to get the call from his dad.

My question is they love the area but don't seem to know it all that well but for where they fish. We do a portage into a lake that is border line hysterical what we have to do to get there. We go through A huge culvert under railroad tracks, through caves, down a set of rapids that tends to eat at least one prop out of three each trip on the way out and then over a thick hellacious portage. It's always an adventure. They love to keep all the fish they can legally to take home. I could care less about taking anything home only a few for shore lunch and that's about it.

I like the trip but would really like to take my dad in the same area with out all the drama in the future if he's able. He's in his mid 70's and I'd like to take him with but he can't this year with just having a heart attack.

Just a few questions. Is there any maps that shows public landings or access on lakes south of the Minaki area? Also does anybody know if the camp grounds on the Canadian topo maps are public?

Understand the resorts and outfitters want to keep this stuff as much under raps as their lively hood depends on tourist traffic but I don't have the money to pay $400 X 7 plus licenses, gas and food for a trip like that. I've got all the equipment and knowledge to do it. Just curious if their is any maps or other publications that list public access points on lakes and public camping areas not so extreme as what we are doing right now. I've got the topo maps and have seen the Internet site that shows crown land that sure is a great site. But finding boat landings is a hit and miss deal.

Am going to try to spend a few more days up there this year and do some scouting for boat landings, campgrounds and a better camp site. Am guessing I've got to pay my dues and am fine with that. Just would be nice to have a map showing public landings.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
