Which Ice Auger do I buy?

I bought an 8 yr old Jiffy model 30 from a buddy at $75. Got the carb cleaned and new blades and it cuts faster than his brand new Strikemaster he just bought. I hear complaints about the chipper blade but it sure works good for me. Granted its a heavy beast, I enjoy the workout after sitting in the shack for awhile!! It starts first pull most of the time also.

I have over the years owned / used all three. The Eskimo and Jiffy both had 3 hp moters. Both started very well over the years, and other than a spark plug every 3 years or so - no engine problems. My newest addition is a Strike Master 10" and it's working fairly well. I had some initial problems with blades, but the company was very helpful in getting me replacement parts at no charge. Each have advantages and disadvantages. The other posts are on the money - care, maintenance and they all work very well. Weight is probably the biggest factor. Don't forget to look at blade replacement as future maintenance costs.

fishinmajishin, funny you say that, he (dairyman) drilled my holes so I wouldnt have to hand crank em with that beast. That thing was fast and nice. Small world, thanks for the info...

Ya that's my "old one". He even got my old Marcum. The new Strike-Lite is even better.

I see you're a PO in Moorhead? My first cousin is a Sarg up there...Steve L. Isn't Cliffy a cop there too?

I have a new jiffy 10" Stealth and I can drills holes with one hand.

I know this cause my other hand is busy pushing the primer bulb and choke lever back and forth to keep it running while I drill. I know it can be fixed but kind of bugs you when its new. My old Jiffy ran great for 30 years till I decided to treat myself to a new one. Sure glad I sold the old one for next to nothing.

Just remember to let them warm up good. I see guys on the lake fire them up and want to cut holes right away. And again on the oil/gas...my old SM liked it 40:1. Not sure about the new 2 strokes though. If in doubt call SM and ask for CY. You won't get put on hold for an hour and he'll give you the straight answer. Alot of guys have gone to AMzoil and swear by it. There's some threads on that topic too.

I am buying my first ever power auger this week. I'm looking at either a Strike Master or Eskimo. I've got friends who have had bad luck with Jiffy. I would like to get a an 8 inch. Just wondering if anybody had any input on either the Strike Master or Eskimo brands. I'm getting tired of hand cranking holes. Thanks in advance...

If you have the auger bit already, get the IceGator electric powerhead. You will be very impressed.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
