wi river current

Recommended Posts

Set up to pan fisn in deeper water today. Duhh! To much current! Luckily I had a jig pole with braided line and 8lb test mono leader and plain jane lead jig, glow orange leadhead, and some small jigging rapalas. Only had crappie minnows to tip jigs with. Fish would look /follow but not hit. Will bring fathead and shiners tommorow. The walleyes did hit the raps though and took home a limit. Do you guys fish the river ice with the same minnow/jig set ups as you do from a boat except vertical instead of dragging or have you found something else that works??

Where are you fishing, Alice, Mohawksin? I went out for a couple of hours on Lake Wausau(WI. River). I fished a 17' hole on the SE side of Snake Bridge by Gullivar's Landing. I haven't fished it for a few years now but in the past it used to produce some nice crappies as well some nice eyes. The hole is only about 30 yards in diameter surrounded by shallow water. The crappies would be in the hole and the eyes in shallow, 2-6'. Anyways, marked a lot of fish....But zero caught. Had fish on the Vex which showed much interest in my baits whether it be a jig and minnow or waxie, they just wouldn't hit! Stayed about an hour after dark. Now I know why I haven't gone back there in a while! Thinking about trying the sloughs on the west side of the bridge. There's some shallow weedy areas which will usually give up a little action. Haven't tryed this year yet, but last year I pulled quite a few gills and crappie out of there. Lots of small ones though. I jump shoot the sloughs here just before the ice sets in. One thing I noticed, whenever I glided my canoe through that area, panfish would always scatter and swirls were everywhere. Lots of guys fish there but I've noticed the same consistant concentrations of fish in a finger slough not far from there. I'm not sure if guys ever fish this little chunk of water. I may have to giver a try tommorrow. Fishing can be tough in WI. I'm spoiled on MN. fishing and I can't seem to get motivated at all about fishing around here. I think I need a fishing "fix" soon or I'll be experiencing withdrawels, I guarantee within a week I'll be heading to the land of 10,000 lakes.......A limit of walleyes off the river? My hat goes off to you! That's a tough feat any time of the year! So where's the hotspot? smile.gif I fish the spring runs below the dams in Nekoosa, Dubay, Moon, Mosinee, Rothschild, and Wausau. 100 fish days aren't that uncommon but size is always lacking. Nekoosa has a pretty good white bass bite as well. BTW, Did you ever make it out to Gary lake for any panfish? Can access be had from the road? Or through the private property? Did the homeowner seem cool with the idea when you spoke with him earlier? I always came from the public land on the opposite side, pretty tough dragging gear!

Sorry can it be luck...north of co rd A NOT D .No never did get back to Gary yet. No real hot spot I fished yesterday just walked out in the cannel south of the bridge on "A" where alice meets the river in 15 fow. North of "A" as soon as I can launch a boat I run north past all the houses and then anchor ( no trolling allowed) in the eddys and pockets and jig/minn and slip bobber/minn. I use to live in Two harbors, Mn Used to travel to Tofte/ shroder area for walleyes. Fished the big lake all the time.. You have got to get to Isle Royale man the ultimate in native trout and national park beauty Great shelter camping. Trecherous with all the reefs and fog banks that roll in from time to time. Need charts, radar to plot a course to the northend of the island or just go in mid july/aug and buzz across to the south end for the day/weekend

Cisco, When is the best time of year to go to Isle Royale?

I live in Duluth and feel foolish for never making the trip. I am looking for fly fishing opportunities from shore. I hear there are a lot of little streams running off that misplaced piece of Michigan.

We always went in mid july to mid aug. Hot days, warm nights, calmer seas. One time I I got the sunsetting on the north shore and the moon rising at the same time in north gap on camcorder. only one of hundreds of memoroable spectacular senic images caputured at the Island. I saw some huge fish taken by shore casters. Always wanted to hike the island but never did, what is there like 6-7 inland lakes. I can only imagine what fly fisherman have done over there.
