morefishplease
I have a 2004 GMC sierra 4x4 1500 and recently had the front end aligned. The service tech told me that they had problems getting the truck to align, and it's still not 100% but a lot better than it was. They didn't find anything wrong with the suspension components either. Now when driving the truck and turning at slower rates of speed the front seems tight and it makes a clunk noise at times coming from about underneath the foot pedals, or on the left front side. It sounds like something was adjusted to tight. Any ideas to what could be wrong? I'm bringing the truck back in monday.
Macgyver55
"Clunk noise" from a GM pickup? Unless they forgot to tighten something, an intermediate steering shaft is the likely culprit.
jwhjr
The steering shaft is a very common issue on those trucks. I have an 04 Chevy and had the "repair" done on it. I think it consists of pulling the shaft and regreasing it. The symptoms you've described fit the issue. If you do a search on it you'll find plenty of information. Good luck. Jeremy airjer W
A quick way to confirm the intermediate shaft is to remove the pinch bolt under the hood and then slide the shaft in and out six or seven times. Then reinstall the pinch bolt making sure not to rotate the shaft at anytime as not to interfere with the airbag clock spring. If the noise goes away than the shaft is bad. morefishplease
I brought the truck back in today and explained my problem, I knew it was not the intermediate steering shaft, as I just had that repalced. It turned out the bushings in the frame were a little lose probably due to having it up and down on the rack so much. Problem fixed, no more noise. This truck has really disappointed me, a lot of nickel and dime stuff due to poor GM engineering in my opinion. Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated, this has to be one of the best sites to get answers and feedback from the people who know. Thanks again
