Superior ice fishing?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know anything about ice fishing in the Ashland area? I've heard of guys fishing in Superior for cohos and browns, even whitefish. Ice apparently gets thick enough to drive on out there? Any info would be great! ~hogsucker

I know they fish chequamegon bay. splake, coho, browns, lakers from ashland to the apostles. I used to live on the north shore across the lake in two harbors,mn. We used to jig lakers in 160 to 200 ft. I only fished cheq. at first ice out for cohos and browns. The bay gets deeper real gradual as I remember but I only trolled out off washburn.

I dont know if the whitefish migrate into the bay beyond bayfield. you would have to watch the websites or keep intouch with a bait shop to find out fish/ice reports. It is a hard water city of anglers out on chequamegon when the ice is safe. Never drilled a hole but saw the activity when I coached youth hockey teams and played tounaments in ashland. Good luck if you go this winter. Lake Superior has the best eating fresh water fish on the continent.

Give Craig Putchat a call at Outdoor Allure in Washburn. He's a heck of a guy, and will let you know what's going on. He's got a web site with fishing/ice reports on it. Hope this helps.
