Help on new sonar for under $300

CHM

Question

I need to replace an old X85 in the back of my boat - it often can't find the bottom.

If you had $300 or less, what would you get? I have a handheld GPS so thats not needed.

Thanks for the ideas,

Chuck

There's a lot of very good sonars out there for under $300. If your looking for great target separation and high resolution, I'd go with the Eagle fishmark 480. It's a 480x480 pixel graph for a price of around $200. That unit comes with water temp as well. The Lowrance X96 is a 320x320 pixel, for the same price; so I see no reason not to go with the higher resolution Eagle. If it is a color graph you're looking for, the Lowrance X67c seems to be really popular. You sacrifice some resolution (320x240 pixel) and screen size, but the color is easy on the eyes to look at. The price will be about $250, but for some reason Fleet Farm has been selling them for $200 (not sure if they still are, but were the entire summer).

Hope this gets you started, in my opinion you can't go wrong with any of the 3 mentioned.

I know you said you already have a hand held GPS but I will throw this out there anyways. I have seen Lowrance LCX 15mt's on [YouNeedAuthorization] for about $300. I have two in my boat and I really like them. They are not as nice as the color units but the sonar/GPS combo with the large display makes for a nice unit. It will accept LakeMaster chips which is very useful.

Otherwise you could get a Lowrance X125 or X96 for under $300 new.

If you wanted to go color and didn't mind a smaller display you could get a X67C. That has a flasher feature that you could also use it for ice fishing if you got it with the ice ducer and case.
