Boom Lake (Rhinelander) info?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I will be in the Rhinelander area the last half of next week. I was wondering if any of you could pass me info about what is working - so far as baits and the cover types that are holding LM and SM at this
time.

Thanks

Grump, do you plan on staying on Boom lake? My parents had a cottage on Velvet/Flannery Lake which is a few miles out of Rhinelander on hwy K. west. Typical infertile bass/panfish lake. Some decent LM bass though. I posted in the crappie forum under the topic "Part time seasonal crappies", this lake is also a few miles out of Rhinelander on hwy G. One drawback is , no boat launch. the road goes to within a few feet of the lake and a cartopper boat or canoe is the only way to go. If interested, let me know. Some good lakes for LM bass are Carroll and Madeline Lakes north towards Woodruff. Walleye, musky, pike, crappie, and panfish are all here also. Shallow and weedy is most of the lake, but there are some nice fish here as well as action for kids. Actually there are a lot of lakes within a stones throw in this area! grin.gif

Yes - I will be staying in Rhinelander, and
concentrating on Boom and the connecting waters. Never got out of the lakes last year, so I am thinking I should give the river a look see as well. Agree/Disagree?

I'm not asking for spots - just an idea of what is working lure wise, depths, cover, etc on that water. Fished it about the same
time period last year, got one undersize LM and a 29" N Pike that was about 5-5.5#.

Hoping to improve things a bit this year...

Thanks

Grump, Boom lake has some quality fish in it, musky especially. The smallmouth and northern are above average also. Panfish when found, can be large, mainly the crappie. Try the shoreline rip-rap by Hodag Park and golf course for smallies, weeds and stumps in Bass lake(N), crappies in the cribs around the Rose street landing. There's plenty of stumps and weeds which can and will hold fish. Boom lake can be tough to give up fish at times, but it can put out some nice numbers and size as well. Minnows and crawlers jigged or bobber fished will work for about anything. Spinners, spinner baits, and topwater baits, as well as the live bait may be your best for bass. Muskys and pike? Throw the tackle box at em, someting should work! smile.gif Good luck on your trip and let us know how you did! can it be luck?

C.I.B.L:

Well - Boom was Boom Lk - just like last year - very few fish. Fished Thur afternoon (4th) - steep - rocky shore line, for smallmouth - fished a craw on a rattle jig - might have had one bite - had a sensation of weight, and about the time I decided it was a fish, it was gone. Also fished the big bog w/ a purple worm - got one strike - two real solid taps- but was so off guard that I missed it.

Friday - I fished the shoreline along the park - got hung up alot in the rocks. Was fishing a beetle spin - craw colors. No bites. Went down to the bridge where Boom goes in to ThunderLake - fished back up along the golf course, nothing, same in Peggy Slough <oh Peggy, my Peggy Slough - ough - ough....>. Might have seen a fish - well - the disturbance in the water that it made. Threw my worm right at the shoreline, and there was a wave away from the spot where I pitched the worm - could have been a fish tight to shore.

About 11-1130, I motored over to the big V shaped bay directly across from the landing, and after about a hour, I got a 28", 4#10oz pike (according to the scale - I think it was heavier - my Fishing Hotspots ruler says 6# - so who knows?). I had bought a muskie sized "Jake" crankbait, in FIre Tiger. Was throwing that, and it got fouled on the line, and was coming back to me on the surface in kind of a corkscrew
motion (I got to figure out how to make a lure do that wink.gif ) - when this pike come out of the water like a Polaris missle and nailed the Jake - went immediately to the bottom - he tugged real good too. THis occured within about 10ft of the boat, so I got a real close up view.

That was it for bites the balance of the day.

Saturday I fished with another guy in our group - he got a couple short SM, but Missed everything bigger or broke them off. I got one 20" +/- pike, but missed everything else. About 3pm, I switched to a white/glitter senko - lots of bites on it - but they may have been panfish.

Can't complain - in the "contest" I was in - my pike won the non-bass division - got a Rod and reel, and 4 muskie baits - so I can't complain. smile.gif The fish was released to bite another day.

Fishing was good - catching was lousy - and that could be me - not the fish.

Thanks for the info - will store it away for next year.

UG, At least you won the contest! Sounds like you at least had a few opportunities on Saturday, they'll be waiting for you next year....And bigger! Boom lake can be hit or miss. The fish are there, only problem is catching em. frown.gif But that's the reason we fish. smile.gif Take care, can it be luck?
