Self Proplled ??

Just picked up a self propeled lawn mower. My question is can I only hold down the propelled arm half way so I can keep up with it? All the way is is way to fast and hard to keep up with. Starting to think I should of picked up a 2 speed one!! I dont want to burn it out doing this and the store I got it from dosnt seem to know a thing! Thanks
