surewood
I'm thinking about buying the real thang and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this call. Does it take much air? Does it have a good low and high end? Is it worth 135.00? Last but not least does it sound goosy? I have a winglok derlin which is a good goose call but takes more air than I like and it's harder to find a consistent low end. Any info on the real thang or another call that sounds great will be apreciated before I drop over a hundred dollars on one.
carpshooterdeluxe
real thang is a higher pitched call in general. not sure about the low moans, i know it can sound amazing in the right hands though. its all about air control with any call. i would say you cant go wrong with it; but dont get discouraged if you cannot make it sing right away. just pick up the bad grammar cd or dvd.also; take the time to get to a store that carries multiple calls if you can. its worth it to blow on 10 different calls and tinker with the guts to find what works for you. Quackaddict9
Scott Threinen's favorite call. What Carp said is probably the best, you can find some audio of the Real Thang on youtube. Many good calls out there, I would look at the death row calls as well. Can't go wrong with a Grounds call though.
Fish&Fowl
I have used my Real Thang for one season so far and loved it. It will do very low moans and very high-pitched clucks and everything in between. The guts are very touchy though, and moving them the slightest bit will change the sound considerably. The amount of air needed will also change with very minor adjustments, but for mine to get low and sound the way I like it, I need to put pretty good air into it. I would say the call is worth the money if you're going to invest ample time to get good with it. Grounds makes great calls and has great customer service. Don't be surprised if you end up talking to Hunter or Tim themselves.
WaveWacker
I use the Tim Grounds super pro mag and really like it. It may run you a little more however.
surewood
Thanks for the info guys. As far as putting in time on the goose call that is not a problem. I'd like to think I'm pretty advanced with a goose call. I listened to it on youtube sounded pretty good. As long as I know it's capable of the full range of sounds as described, I'm pretty sure I can figure it out. Hey guys only about four months to early goose. surewood
Sorry quackaddict my mind drifts from time to time but I always have the fall season schedules in the back of my mind. Sure hope the duck numbers are up this year, it was a kinda a tough year last year for me.
Quackaddict9
haha yeah, I just dont want to look at it when its not even summer yet but hey I'm actually excited for early goose!!!
Walleye Waltz
I think you will love a Grounds call. I use the super mag pro myself and love it. I dealt with Tim himself and when I bought it he asked how I like to blow as he would tune the call to my style calling. Right out of the box it was right on, wonderful call. Tim custom engraved it for me as well for no extra charge. I have not had very good luck with the duck call from him. It tends to freeze up on me so that one when in the case. I now use the RNT org. acr. and I would never use another call again!
stam34
just another suggestion dont be afraid to try Jeff Foiles Straight Meat Honker this call requires no back pressure and is easy to blow. last year was my first year with this call and it worked well shot alot of geese with it. ironman
I'm also looking towards early goose already. With all the nesting and hatching going on is pumping me up. Also, I determined to get good at calling and picked up the bad grammer dvd...awesome. If you havn't bought it or borrowed it from a buddy yet...you gotta. I just have a primos honky tonk...and for the money it really isn't bad..I can get most of the sounds out of it I hear on the dvd...but its tough. I dont want to learn any bad habits so I'm going to buy a better call and soon. I blew on a few from Gander but they dont have much in stock right now. That's the problem with retail...this isn't the goose "season" so its tough to find a variety of calls right now. I dont want to buy online because I actually want to try these calls first. Anybody know of a store that has a decent selection right now? I'm planning on checking our Cabela's here in a few days....its my birthday Sunday and I'm hoping for a few more cabela's gift cards before I go. I for one cannot wait for this fall, if I had the money I'd be hunting birds in the southern hemispere!!
stam34
Cabelas has a good selection and make sure you check the bargain cave. Scheels in mankato also has a good selection also if you happen to be in the area.
