Rod types

Recommended Posts

Guys and gals, what do you prefer to use for these types of fishing-- Xtra Heavy, Heavy, Med Heavy and length.

Topwater

Jerkbaits/Gliders/small bucktails

Double 10 bucktails

I'm looking for inputs and am looking for another rod- 7'6" or 8' but not sure what power, MH or H. Right now I have a 7' MH fenwick and 6'9" H St.Croix (which is for sale). Thanks

Personally, I like the shorter sticks for jerkbaits. I have a couple of 6'9" that I use. I have one Fenwick and one Gander Guide series.

For my big bucktails and crankbaits, I have a great setup. 8' St Croix with an Abu 7000 on it. Can throw big baits all day without feeling it.

For topwaters and smaller bucktails, I have a 7'6" Guide Series with a 6500C3 on it. Works great, although I primarialy only use it for topwaters, or when my brother won't put my St Croix down!! \:o

Hey quack,

Tough to get an "everything" rod.....

Here's what I use for the presentations you listed:

Topwater: 8' Heavy jerkbait blank for the big stuff like a Weagle, 8'6" for medium baits

Jerkbaits/Gliders: Same 8' Heavy as for topwaters. I too used to use the shorter rods, but I really like the 8 footer.

Small bucktails: 8' or 9' M action muskie blank, even a 7'10" H bass flippin' stick.

Double 10 bucktails: 8'6" H action.

So, if I was to look to one rod to compliment your 7'6MH Fenwick I'd lean towards the 8' Shimano Compre Heavy. Slightly on the low end of Heavy, but would work for the double 10's, but still enough tip action handle most baits. Lifetime over-the-counter warranty and a price around $120 or so makes it a great option for you.

8'6" Okuma H with the telescoping handle is a good option too. You can find one thru most online places.
