Baudette area

Recommended Posts

I found I have access to a cabin at Ballard's Resort on Lake of the Woods in Baudette. If I were to launch from there, which direction would I head for Muskie action on June 21st? I know absolutely nothing about the area and I will definitely be buying a chip. I just don't think it's something I should pass up and I would like to make the most of it. By the time I get there I will have run out of money, so a guide will kinda be out of the question (and I still have to pay for the gas to get back!).

I can hear it now...head to Nestor Falls instead \:\)

Morson, maybe?

PDX,

About the only experience I have fishing LOTW is in Sabaskong Bay out of Morson. That's a pretty good jaunt from Ballards, and kind of defeats the purpose of you being there though. Don't know about this for sure, but my impression is that there isn't much for musky numbers in the Wheelers Point area? I'm guessing it's 60-90 (probably more like 90) minutes to Morson, with some slow down for crossing the border. Good luck,

I'll go to Morson, I suppose. I don't think I can pass up fishing that water just because I wouldn't drive 50 miles. I've certainly driven further than that many days in a row in MN just to fish a certain lake. What kind of documentation do you have to have for the border crossing back? I have my passport, but my fishing buddy doesn't.

Where can you launch in Morson?

PDX,

That's good timing for you, as that weekend is the muskie opener in Ontario. There is a gov't launch at the end of the road at Morson (hwy 621). Free launch and ample parking. Just go until the road ends, you can't miss it.

US requires either a passport or picture ID AND birth cert. Passport makes it much easier, talk your buddy into getting one. He should have plenty of time if he applies now. Canada only wants a picture ID.

You can get licenses at the Shell station in Rainy River, the Cafe in Bergland or the Morson Shopping Center, all are right on the way.

Hope this helps.

Hiya -

From Baudette by boat, you'd have to go a LONG ways over totally open water to get anywhere close to a muskie. They just aren't there on the American side. Far better trailering into Morson and launching at Govt Dock. It's about an hour's drive.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Rob hit the nail on the head. We used to launch out of Morson for quite a few years and you are literally right on top of the fish. I don't think that I would want to drive across the Big Traverse all the way up to Morson.....get a west wind and you would be SCREWED!

Thanks, guys. That is definitely my plan now. The timing, Eskay, isn't a coincidence, I only say 6/21 because I already knew that was opener ;\)

So I guess I don't need to ask where the muksies are, since Bret told me I can start casting as soon as I get on the water! I'll go back and read Muskies on the Shield again...in fact I think I'll read it over and over every week until June.
