bent prop shaft?

Rivernut

Question

How tough or expensive is it to replace bent prop shaft? 1996 25 hp Merc. Ran 2 times last fall not knowing it was bent, and never noticed a vibration or any other problem. If left could it cause any other problems. Thanks

I had the same thing happen to me. Pretty much the same motor. You need a special tool to remove the shaft. I tried but failed.

What I ended up doing was buying a used shaft on hsolist and then having a professional do the job for me.

I think the total was around $300. That included a new water pump/impeller since he was in there anyways.

Good Luck

Any questions shoot me an email

Thanks for the info, Dtro. My skeg and prop were just repaired this winter and I wish he would have noticed then. Also had the impeller replaced, but that is done from the top of the lower unit on this one. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Also I would recommend fixing it if you can see the wobble. That is not good for the motor.

There is a spec for acceptable runout that you can check if you have a dial indicator.
