fishing with yarn

There's two ways Dave. The way I do it is to use my fly tying vise and tie a "yarn fly" or a "glo bug". These are actually the same thing and can be googled on how to tie. The other way is to snell a hook and then place a few strands of yarn in the loop. The next step is to trip the yarn into an egg shaped ball. Yarn flies can then be either drifted along the bottom with lead, or under a float, but try to keep in near the bottom.

It's usually a springtime method for steelies. I have actually caught little brookies on them on inland WI trout streams too, but's it's more of a steelie pattern. It also catches a few river suckers, too.

How cold? It was 35 two weeks ago and this past weekend it was almost 40. Im talking water temp here now. How long do the stealies run? Do they leave more when the water warms up or when the water slows down?
