catfishing around duluth

is there any good catfishing spots around the duluth minnesota area or pine county area?

The upper St. Louis River has some good fishing for cats. I haven't been for a few years, but here are the details. We used to take canoes to Brookston then follow the road next to the RR track headed upstream. We would float the river for about 6 or 7 miles back to Brookston. We caught lots of nice cats and some walleyes as well. There were several spots for shore fishing off the road.

Grew up around Virginia and Eveleth. We usually had good luck on the St. Louis dwnstream of the Eveleth Mining Co. dam starting at the dam and on down to the mouth of the West Two River. I thought we were the only persons in northern MN that chased cats. Got some unusual looks from local bait dealers when we asked for their dead minnows. Funny, they never charged us for 'em either.

Also the St. Louis River above the 23 bridge, by water street mud slide area, above and below the Oliver Bridge and the deep stretch on the Wi. side of spirit island/lake.

is the south kettle river by hinckley and is that where the st croix hooks up with it there as well?

No one mentioned the Cloquet river. Smaller fish in general, but good eaters. The water is clean in the Cloquet. I can't think of another river where catfish and brook trout could be caught on the same day (browns too!).

Lots of good answers. When things get warmer check out the BWCA board. I know Catfishhunter lives in Duluth and chases them quite a bit when work allows.

cloquet river has some nice catfish in it. Once i mistaked a 8pounder for a walleye...untill it was in the net! Night fishing works well also.

Where are you located? If you're in it for some better sized cats I'd suggest spending a night on the Croix in late summer when it drops. I grew up fishing a 40 mile stretch stretch of the Croix and our best trips for big cats was at night during late summer with dead muskie decoy suckers. With the water down the fish tend to pile up in the limited areas. Top producing spots where the heads of any sizable holes. I've fished cats for a few years around Duluth and it doesn't compare to the Croix. If you don't care what size they are then c'mon up and try any of the holes on the St. Louis or the Cloquet. The stretch above hwy 23 on the St. Louis that Northlander mentioned isn't open to any sort of fishing until May 19th in case you were planning a trip before then. Good luck.
