help ID hawk

We have had this hawk hanging around for a couple of weeks. Approx. 10-12 inches tall and has a call similar to kill deer. Long tail. I will try to get a better picture, but this is the best I can do for now. The tree is about 100 feet away and is about 50 feet tall.

I hope this one is good enough. I have watched this guy all day long. There is actually 2 of them.

Bruce, it looks like you've got a broad-winged hawk.

Thanks Steve, I looked him up and no doubt, thats what he is. I just don't remember seeing one before. Are they common around here?

They breed throughout all of north central and northeastern Minnesota, Bruce. They are our most common warm-season woodland hawk up here.

Well then I feel embarrassed if they are that common.

No embarrassment necessary. They don't draw a lot of attention to themselves in the breeding season, and they aren't all that easy to see in the heavy woods unless they fly right past you.

Well if you were any closer to Grand Rapids, you could shoot pictures all day long Steve. Like I said, there has been two of them for quite awhile in the trees above my house. The wife is worried about the other little birdies, but I actually have enjoyed watching and listening to them.
