Hey i hope this is the right forum for this topic. anyways i was wondering if anyone had ever fished big stone lake(MN-SD border) before. I will be making a trip out there in the middle of april for opener. I wanted to get a feel of what the fishing would be like, what the lake was like, what to expect, what to try etc. I do know that it has stocked walleyes and is a very shallow lake that does not get very deep. I have also heard that the walleyes can be very shallow. Any help would be greatly apriciated. Thanks

Fishbuster have fished it the last 10 years water temperature is the key here but look to pitch shallow rock with jigs and minnows, near evening anchor up and fish bobbers on the rocks during the day ive fished spinners in 5-6 feet of water and down very well as well, then again ive seen people pitchin raps and people trolling boards, shoot me an email if you need any more email- [email protected]

I've fished both Big Stone and Traverse on openers for the last oh 20 years and that sounds just about right. I've acctually had better luck fishing from shore than in the boat for about the first 2 weeks of season.

Don't forget the ever famous chartrese jig head with a white plastic curly tail. That combo has taken more fish over the years for me on these two bodies of water than I can ever count.

The one thing that I've learned from fishing both bodies of water is even though they seem like twin lakes if something is working on Big Stone do something totally different on Traverse.

I could go on for a while like this but I don't want to give everything up out in the open like this.

Good luck on opener. I have to work so I won't be getting out for a few days afterwards so let me know how you do. Or if you want to know a few other things about each lake you can e-mail me at: [email protected]

I live 2 miles from Traverse and have a cabin on Bigstone. Been fishing both for 35 years. Better pack the ice fishing gear for the opener on the 19th. I will be surprized if either lake is open this year for the opener. Lottsa ice this winter,(good ice) and not much run off.

Talked to a guy tonight that checked the ice today in front of his cabin on the N end of the lake. Still 19 inches 100 yards out.Couple inches of soft stuff, the rest was solid. Sure there is more out in the middle. I measured as much as 36 inches out there this year.
