Windows to a Mac Computer

Central Bassman

Question

Hey guys, I’m in the market for a new notebook style computer and I’m looking at maybe getting a Mac. I have never used one before but looked at them at Best Buy today. Just wondering how hard it is to make the move from a windows computer to a Mac style computer. Likes and Dislikes???

Thanks

Sure thing, I will email you to get your address.

I did read your other posts and I agree with everyone else it's probably Windows related, meaning the Windows software is messed up. The CD will load different software than what you have installed on your computer completely, so it doesn't matter if the Windows setup is messed up or not.

If you try the CD and it doesn't load, then I guess it could be hardware related or if you can load off the CD but can't access the hard drive, then the drive may be shot. I don't think this is the case though. If you are seeing the Windows splash screen but can't get any further or even logged into safe mode, that's gotta be a Windows problem of some kind 99% of the time and a reformat and reinstall should do the trick.

Another utility disk that works good is UBCD4Win. Unfortunately, you have to make one yourself or have someone provide one to you. This is because you need a full version of Windows to make the disk.

Basically, it doesn't load windows from your HDD, it loads a shell version of Windows into memory and from that you can run many different utilities. Almost always, you can access your files too, unless the HDD is damaged.

The problem with your computer could be a number of things, but I'd guess a corrupt file. Could be as simple as bad memory though. I'd check that first. Sometimes, simply removing the memory and putting it back in can get you going if that's the problem.

Also, there was a procedure to load one of your past restore points manually and I did it once to rescue a computer that had a very similar-sounding incident. It wasn't that hard, but I didn't bookmark the process and can't find it now.

Actually, if you're asking about "Microsoft Office," the answer is 'Yes.' I have Office 2004 for Mac and like that just fine, but the 2008 version for Mac was just released recently.

I'm not a mac guy so don't know for sure, but I don't think you can install the office that came for your windows on a Mac. You could probably get an emulator on the mac to run it, but again I'm not sure. I think you have to buy the office for a mac.

There is a version of Office for the Mac. There is also a program called OpenOffice which is about 95% compatible with Office and it's free. OpenOffice is available for all platforms. (Windows, Mac, Linux)

Where you able to find and copy the files from your hard drive to your USB stick?
