Ignition coil

Pikemaster101

Question

Any one ever replace one of these I have a 2001 Silverado and my check engine light has been going on and off mostly when pulling things or if I really hammer it down. I hooked it up to a friend’s tester and it said random cylinder misfire. After talking to a pro he said it is probably the ignition coil but I would have to bring it in to a better computer to figure out which one of the eight it is and get it fixed.

I went on line and looked at these and they had some for all different prices. How much will one of these be??

Any other advice on this topic would be great.Like do you really think that this is the proublem??????

Thanks

5.3 liter?

If so each cylinder has its own coil. It would be unlikely that a coil has gone bad causing a random cylinder misfire. I have had plugged cats cause random misfires on individual banks, 1-3-5-7 or 2-4-6-8. I think a more in depth scanning that can show the misfire counts on individual cylinders is in order. Then focus on those cylinders. It may be nothing more than the plugs showing signs of there age?

As Airjer said, if it is a random cylinder misfire, its likely not a single coil. You didn't mention how many miles are on the vehicle, but if it is over 100,000, before replacing anything else put in a set of plugs and wires first. (unless they already have been done). Its always a good idea to do things that are due first to make it easier to diagnose afterwords if there is indeed another problem.

Also the 5.3 can develope a miss/rough idle, especially when cool, due to a leaking intake gasket. This motor has a "dry" intake so it will not leak any coolant, but from what I have seen they can develope small vacuum leaks over time. Most of the ones I have done were in the 90 to 100 thousand mile range.
