mounting the reel

How does everyone secure their reels to the poles?
Tape? Tie straps?
I found a great way. Tape the reel on tight with electrical or duct tape, then 3 coat it with liquid electrical tape. This stuff makes a real nice waterproof handle when done. It's made by Plasti Dip, and is
about 6.00 a can at Walmart, In the automotive section near the electrical connectors. And if you have to remove it, all you have to do is slice it carefully and peel it off, it is only on as tight as the tape but it holds the tape on permanently until cut I put it in the freezer and it didnt get hard (did that come out right?)Anyhow, this stuff is good!1 can does about 10-15 rods so good for a couple reel swaps if needed.

I use a self-fusing silicon tape that is available at auto stores or Walmart. Not sure where else you could find it. It's sort of like electrical type but better. No sticky or gooey residue on it that'll make a mess. Same stuff used by the military on electrical wiring.

That's some good stuff! It is very handy to keep around for many applications. Most hardware electrical supply stores will have it in black. If you snoop around you can also find it in red and yellow. It is good to -40 and up to +130. Self sealing silicon Fusion tape will run about $8 a roll.

Another option is heat shrink tape. Wrap it and heat it and it shrinks up snug. Bad part of this product is it is a bit sensitive to cold and chemicals like petroleum products. It will get a bit slippery too. Heat shrink tape will run about $12 a roll.

My favorite for rod wraps is the silicon 1" self sealing fusion tape. I think it actually helps to reflect heat back and keep your hands warm too. Much more comfortable then vinyl electrical tape anyway.

Yep, that's handy stuff, lots of uses. But if I tape on a reel with electircal tape (which is what I use if the rod has no seat), it's plenty waterproof enough for me (never had one unravel yet), and using the product you mention would add another step and take more time. grin.gif

That silicon tape is the real deal. Use it just like electrical tape. The only real difference is that it fuses itself together.

I've heard it makes a great emergency plumbing repair too!

I will have to keep the silicone tape in mind, I have never seen it but it sounds like good stuff. I always used electrical tape but it always seemed to start coming undone and gets slimy feeling put a coat of the liquid over it and it will never come off and feels very good to the touch and warm too. My fishing partner said the same thing "Thats just another step! but he checked out my poles and when he was gone so was my can of Liquid (Putz bring back what you dont need back I still got 1 more rod to do!).
I always wondered about the shrink tubing.

Oh well nuff said we have several good ways.
Thanks for the info
