Besides rods and lures you can also work on cases (leatherwork) and knives (wood/metal work). Here's a couple of knives I made this weekend. Still have to work on the sheath's. One of the knives is a fillet knife the other is a sandwich knive I plan to take camping (cut's bread, cheese, salami, and isn't too bad for chopping).

I bought the blades. There are a lot of good knife blanks out there. I've made some of my own woodworking tools by grinding tool steel and then heat treating but for a normal knife why? Anyhow, the handles are dymondwood, pins are brass rod. The dymondwood was cut with a scroll saw and epoxied to the steel. The dymondwood is impregnated with resin so it doesn't really need a finish. The pins stay in by peening them. After sanding out to 600 grit I applied CA glue as a finish then started sanding with micro-mesh to 3600. After the 3600 I applied a second coat of CA glue then started sanding at 3200 finishing at 4000 micro-mesh. From there I put finished off on a buffing wheel.

CA - Cyanoacrylate adhesive, otherwise known as super glue! It works well as a finish for exotics and non-porus woods. It's rather nasty stuff to work with (wear a respirator) but it dries hard and polishes well.
