Last season was my first in utilizing the drop-shot rip. I found it especially productive in those mid-late summer months when the bigger bass seem to be relating to cover in deeper water. Typically, I fished the rig along the outside weedlines in 14-18 ft of water, or if I found a piece of structure that seemed fairly isolated.

The most difficult part for me using this setup was learning how to set the hook. Because of the direction and position of the hook, a vertical hook set is difficult and will result in a few lost fish. A nice sweeping motion to either side I find is best.

Someone asked if the bait would look limp...I have found that with the bait suspended and the weight at the bottom, the slightess movement can trigger strikes. The waves moving your boat will even give it more than enough action at times if you keep a tight line.

I always have a drop shot rig set up on one of my poles now. It's quite funny that if I'm not catching fish using a traditional bait, I switch to the DS and I will almost always find a fish or two. It's a great set up for one to realize that there are big bass deep, and it will allow one to gain confidence in targeting deep water bass.
