Best cheap food?

I haven't bought ground beef in a grocery for quite some time (we buy in bulk) but I'm thinking a 1/4lb. hamburger could be far less costly made the old fashioned way - at home in the kitchen.

I'm thinkin' 4lbs lean ground beef at $2.00/lb and a couple bucks for 8-pack buns and you've got $6.00 tied up in 8 burgers. Condiments would be negligeable so we're talking $.75 for a burger that's twice the weight of a McD and pure beef; $.80 if you throw a lettuce leaf and tomato slice on it.

onion bagel 5/$1.15, cream cheese, spoonful of bacos on each half. Around 50 cents for breakfast each day. Macaroni and cheese for lunch, hot dogs for dinner with baked beans. Total food cost per day around $3.00, hospital bills $100,000.
