New Drop Shot set up

RK,

You mentioned that the berkley 100% floro was not your favorite. I used vanish transition last year and really seemed to like it. This off-season I have heard a lot of the pros have been using the 100% floro. I realize that when you are sponsored by a company, you may be a bit biased but I've only heard good things until now. I was planning on using it for a few reels this year but maybe not... Do you dislike the line itself or just for drop-shotting? DD has persuaded me to try the Gamma copoly mono but maybe I'll give the the floro a try as well.

Hiya SPD -

I should have elaborated a little - I didn't like it on spinning gear. I think it's probably pretty good stuff on baitcasting gear where it being on the stiff side doesn't matter as much. I have a spool of #17I tried some 8# and it seemed thicker in diameter than others I'd used, and when I tried casting it on a jig worm rod, the line slap on the blank was horrendous. I haven't had that with Triple Fish.

Vanish Transition is better than regular Vanish I think, but it still seems to me that it has some of the same tendencies toward brittleness that Vanish has had. I tried 20# Vanish T last season flipping, and broke some fish off on the hookset. It's tough line, and abrasion resistant as all get out, but not as shock resistant as I think it maybe should be. I do think it's ok though for something where there's less shock - like drop shotting.

The Gamma fluoro is very good, and I'm going to try some of the copoly this summer.

For mono the line I really like for drop-shotting is Cortland Endurance. It's a copolymer of some sort I think, technically. I have it on several spinning outfits (6#) that I use casting grubs and jigworms for smallies. Love the stuff. Tough, and very very thin, and handles beautifully. Wish it were easier to find.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

RK, you broke the fish off on Vanish because you're mean to bass and like to hurt them by setting the hook so hard. You need to lighten up... bass are a very refined sophisticated, one might say delicate species.(lol, Deitz made me write that)

Ok, now I will quite being a smart a--.

I use two drop shot rigs. The first is a 7' G-Loomis,spinning rod in medium action, fast tip(I know Quantum is the one I staff for.)This rod has an extremely stiff butt section, but a wonderfully fast tip. I have a Quantum Energy PT in size 30 on this rod. I've also used a Quantum Catalyst on this rig. The size 30 is a large reel, with a large spool. Which I feel cuts down on all the line twist you get drop shotting with out a swivel. I do not use a swivel. For line I spool 6/14 Fireline with a 6 foot leader of fluorocarbon.I like the stiffness of the fireline and when uni-knotted to fluorocarbon the sensitivity is superior to any other combination I've been able to find. I was using the "stand-out hooks but switch back to Gamakatsu finesse wide gaps(usually size 4). I had trouble with line wear when using the stand-out hooks. The second rig is a heavy rig. I use a Tour PT rod (PTC745FGS) which is a 7'4" rod and a Quantum Tour Edition (TE1170PT). I spool all fluorocarbon on this one, usually Vanish Transition (14 or 17 pound).Deitz got me using Gama Edge last season and I really like it. But for drop shotting with all the line twist you have or at least I have, I'm changing line constantly and even if you use backing (and you should) it still gets costly. Gama is running about $32 bucks for 120 yards and Transition is running $17 buck for 250 yards. But if you can get a deal on Gama or cost is not an issue I would use Gama; I think it's a superior fluorocabon.

You mean I'm not supposed to step into the hookset? Dang... That's the fun part ;\)

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
