Ugly Stick Ice Rods

I have a brother in law with six boys who like to come to my place and go ice fishing. After many accidents with my good rods (Thorne Bros.), I decided to pick up some less expensive rods for the kids to use.

I picked up 8 Ugly Stick Pro Ice rods for 19.00 each, with the reels and line installed.

Two questions. How good are the Ugly Stick lite, and the Ultra Lite rods? And does anyone know what line the company puts on the reels? I fished with the Ultra Lite this weekend, and was impressed with the line. No memory in the line. Light weight, and the line sinks fast, even with light jigs. Caught a 20" eye on this rod and line combo, and seen no problem with the line.

I don't have any answers for you ... but I have experience with Ugly Stick open water rods and if they are as indestructable as those, then they are a great choice for use by your brother in law's kids. Sounds like you were happy with there performance, so I would guess they would be also. If not then they should probably consider investing in their own rods.

Keep the Thorne Bros rods for your own personal use. At $60-70 a piece they are way too expensive and fragile to loan out to someone that may not appreciate it's quality and price.

The line is Shakespeare Supreme line. It's a comparable performer, I don't have any bad things to say about it. I'm almost sure it's 4# test, I could be wrong as I might have an ice version of it too.

There's not much in sensitivity when it comes to an ugly stik for ice fishing. The regular ugly stik with the foam handle has more flex while the cork reel seat one has some graphite making it quite stiff. The pro combo comes in two models one's the standard and the other one is lite. The pro lite model comes with better reel and the rod feels a tad bit more stiff available in 24", 25", and 27". I believe the standard pro comes in 25", 26", and 30". In feel alone, they feel like all medium power regardless of whether they were rated ultrlight, light, or medium. To me seems like the tip action is the same in all of them. These rods are tough and can take a lot of punishment. I've got a couple of them and in fact the longer length will perform better. I personally use the 27" for toothy pikes and URL walleyes and it's got a baitcaster on it.

I have personally used ugly stick ice rods(4 of them) since the early 90s and have no complaints.. I have used them on everything from sunnys, crappies, walleyes, and northerns..just had to have the right line and weight set ups to make the rod work right for each type of fish... I still carry them with me and use them on occasion ,, but for the last couple of years i have went to a specialized used rod system ,so i dont use them as much as i used to .. My last use of i was fishing slab crappies and was useing it as a dead stick.. a fish showed up high on the flasher so it was the bait in the closeest area to the fish so i reeled up to the fish and twiched the bait and let it sit and then a tap came .. set the hook and rod bent in half... 15 mins later out came a 29" walleye....these rods i used for everything untill i got myself set up for a rod for each type of fish or style of fishing i was doing at the time as i said above..

It's unfortunate that they couldn't build these ugly sticks with in longer lengths of 32" or 36". I really like how they load with a big fish on. If I had to customize one, it would probably be like taking the top part of a two peice, but after the work, time, and cost put into it, I would just end up with a T.B rod.

I think you will like them. I caught a 25lb muskie with a light, and alot of 2-3lb walleye on the UL pole. as soon as i can figure out how to get pic off my phone and on to the computer i will put them on. I will never buy any other ice fishing rod.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
