Guest
My friend is building a retractable wheel trailer frame for me for an ice house. The frame is built but he needs the parts for the wheel/hub and whatever else is needed because the junk yards around his area are depleted of the variety he likes to use. His preference is AMC Gremlin type assemblies. Why AMC parts? This was just his preference but he didn't elaborate on why.I know very little about what is needed. What parts would I have to get? I know the tire and hubs would have to come off. I'm assuming the entire axle would need to come off too? Anything else? He's got the retractable crank assembly parts so it's just the wheel and hub assembly parts that I'd need to get. Could anyone please suggest what I'd need in correct terminology so that I'd be able to ask junkyards if they have the right stuff? Any suggestions on north/west metro junkyards? hawkeye43
the best thing is to for get the junk yard and go buy new 3500 # axles stubbs. you never know what they been through. its peace of mind. what you are looking for is the axle hub and wheel[This message has been edited by hawkeye43 (edited 09-04-2003).]
Phred52
As a 17 year veteran of salvage yard work,I can tell you the reason for the AMC spindles is, you can use older Ford, Chrysler and AMC wheels/tires on your house. Thus wheels are A LOT easier to comeby. Also the spindles are a "Bolt on" rather than a "Weld-on" so that saves on the cost of assembly. STAY with the AMC!!!! Guest
Phred52,Thanks for the very valuable information. Sounds like you've done a bit of this type of stuff. Can you tell me what the parts are that I would need to pull off the AMC as one would describe it to a salvage yard? You mentioned the spindle, is that another term for the axle? Just a bit clueless...Thanks.
