tying a leader?

I very rarely use one while ice fishing as I mostly target sunfish and crappies but I do tie a leader while targeting pike or walleyes. I would typically use a leader of a heavier braided line for pike tying a uniknot to connect my two lines. 6 lb ice mono to 14 lb crystal fire line (approximately 20 inches.

I know some anglers swear by a swivel and a leader to eliminate line twists and a spin on the jig or presentation but I dont see this as being too large of a problem and haven't seen it affect my results. I'm sure you'll get a few more responses. Hope this helps.

I've got two situations: as I typically use 4# test

targeting bigger fish using bigger lead line

targeting smaller fish using smaller lead line

my length varies a lot, from 6 inches up to maybe 12 feet. I mainly go for preventing line break or lure presentation. Superlines for line break prevention. Copoly's for lure presentation.

I typically use a leader on most of my rods. I find that it will reduce line twist quite a bit. I can't seem to keep the main line from twisting, don't know what my problem is. I use a spro swivel anywhere from 12" to 36" up the line and it helps a lot for me. Also works great if you are using flouro for the leader material.

Your main line twist is coming from your reel when you wind it. The swivel is the buffer from tranmitting that line twist onto your lure as wells as preventing line twist from a spinning lure back onto the main line. I see a very big difference from main line twist between the reels that I use. My Stradic typically has very little to no line twist. Whereas my Sahara's has more line twist and my cheap Shakespeare reels typically get the most line twists. And the twist is typically buried in the spool right about where how deep I'm fishing. So once in a while I have to drop the lure all the way to the bottom to pull off the line twist. Haven't ever had to do that with the Stradic. But I typically at least once per outing stretch my line out.
