I am wondering if anyone has any info on stocking of Musky in Green lake,Calhoun Kandiyohi County or any lake like Koronis ,Rice in Stearns county.

We had brought this up last fall when DNRs Bruce Gilbertson was at one of our club meetings and someone from Muskys Inc had made a web comment that talks were going on to introduce possibly into one of these two chains.

I am going to talk to Bruce but am wondering if the people from Muskies Inc have heard anythng????????????

////????thanks

I haven't heard anything at our St. Cloud chapter meetings recently. Now that the DNR has released their long term management plan I suspect we should hear some news regarding new fisheries in the coming months. The long term goal is for 8 new lakes in the state. 2 per region.

I posted on this prior but it was lost due to the site maintenance.

Koronis and Green are candidates, long term goal is 8 new lakes added in the future, 2 per Region as DeBo stated. 64 page document on the DNR site if you're looking for some reading to kill an evening. Keep in mind this won't happen for a few years best case, and couple that with the fact it takes around 7+ years for a fish to reach 40 inches we're talking about late 2010s before it's a legitimate water.

Green is interesting since it's already a hot bed of debate amongst locals regarding smallies and walleyes competing for forage. Doing well for both now, but the introduction of another game fish will set Spicer on end! Tons of angler and recreational traffic as it is, but a very viable candidate.

Koronis: 3000+ acres, deep, loaded with structure, and selfishly speaking just down the river from the family cabin on Rice. Also a smallie and walleye lake, almost like they are trying to create some mini-Mille Lacs type waters? From what I've seen pike do well, as there are some really nice ones in there. For it's size, it can sure get windy though!

A factor to keep in mind is that it's connected to Rice via the Crow River system, and migration between lakes is a factor considered in lake selection. It's well over a mile up the river to Rice, but muskies will travel that distance. Rice is 1500+ acres managed primarily for walleyes, but has lower water quality due to agricultural run-off among many other factors. Lots of rough fish too, so I honestly don't know if that bodes well for Koronis or not.

Email your local DNR office with your feedback and support.

St. Cloud chapter and others are still working with the DNR and lake associations to find lakes to stock. Things were moving right along and were stalled somewhat with the issues at Gull lake and waiting on the DNR to finalize their long term management plan. More information should be coming out next year as we keep working. Koronis started out near the top of the list but is not looking like a viable candidate in the near future.

THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO GET INVOLVED - Fish the lakes you want to see muskies stocked in, talk to the locals, educate yourself, and get involved in a local musky club. Winning the hearts and minds of lake associations and residents is still the biggest fight. Don't sit and wait and for the DNR to throw some fish in your favorite lake - THE BATTLE IS FOUGHT AND WON ON THE LOCAL LEVEL.

I also think Koronis would be an awesome lake for stocking, lots of neat structure, but-- water quality is an issue with Koronis as well as with Rice as Cjac stated, major algae blooms plague both lakes. Koronis has a good forage base with lots of forage including some ciscoes and shiners.

50" pig hit it on the head as far as educating the local community because I believe the local residents would fight this tooth and nail.

Locals do fight hard - understandable that they don't want their lake overrun with additional boats, be it musky fishermen or otherwise. This is usually not the main reason though, because most people realize we all share the resource.

Fact is most of these people on lake associations are not educated on the benifits of stocking a top predator, so education is key, as is talking to the right people. It on takes ONE (1) person on a lake association in favor of stocking to potential turn the tide.

I've already registered my comments on the DNR Long Range Plan, hope you all do the same!

the good part of getting something started is that the same DNR fisheries office{Spicer MN]is for getting one of them started

They have control over both lakes so we dont have to get more than one office battling for privalage to fish MUSKY

Like you said [most lake associations are not educated]

Green Lake also has very few people on Boards of assc that even fish

Dont they Know that having several species of game fish in their lakes brings up and holds property values and the local economy

I really noticed at the GNW weigh in and several LCA weigh ins that people on property owners assc showed an interest in keeping weeds out of lake but they dont fish and thats where problem lyes

Last summer we had a quadrupeld presence of DNR enforcement for three weeks during tournament time as PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION complained boaters were transporting millfoil into lakes and out etc

Just think of the accelerated cost of enforcement that could have gone into education or stocking etc

Not a single warning or ticket was written for violation of the things they showed concern over

I am all for charging a fee of 10.00 per dock and lift per year and using those moneys for fish stocking ,or preditor deletion on lakes. That way the property owners would be involved or made to feel part of fish population.

As I said a good population of fish heavily increases thier property value
