Surface Tension
Greenbay I'll try and do this diplomaticly. Theres 1 big difference between a Vex and Most all other sounders. Thats the way sensitivity is supressed. Vex is a contsant 400 watts. To turn the gain down on a Vex the signal RECIEVED by the reciever is supresed. Your 1500 watt sounders are 1500 watts peak. Sensitivity is controlled by signal SENT. To get 1500 watts you would have to max out the gain to get there. In 30 years of using sounders I have never had to max out the gain on dozens of brands/types of different sounders and I drive them hard and In water as deep as 300 ft. So in shallow water you may be only putting out 200 watts and as you increase depht with your gain controll your wattage will increase. An other reason for higher wattage is because of the cone angle. With a wider cone angle you need more watts in deeper water.
