Garbage Disposal

Here's one I hope to have some help on:

I have a newer garbage disposal (new Thanksgiving 2006) and I try to turn it on the other day, and it doesn't work. It hummed for about 10 seconds and then nothing. I tried to turn it on again and there wasn't even a sound. It is hard wired to a switch, and I haven't had a power issue before. What could have happened, and how do I resolve this issue? I haven't checked the power, because it did make noise the first time I turned it on. Before I go digging into electricty...which is not my best...I was hoping to get some additonal input.

Start by unplugging it and try to find something inside it that is stopping it from working,make sure you can hand spin the blades inside it.Then look closely at the unit itself,there should a reset button on its body somewhere,press the reset plug it in and try it.

When you bought the disposal included should be a tool that looks something like an allen wrench. It goes into the bottom of the disposal. Stick the tool end into the slot in the bottom of the disposal and turn. If it turns freely, nothing is binding the motor/cutting blades.

Most disposals have a reset button located somewhere on the motor. If it should jam up, (from say a spoon or fork that snuck down the drain,) it will pop the reset button. As was said before, make sure the power is off, check to see that the impeller turns freely, check the reset button and it should work. If not, either the unit is bad, or it possibly popped the breaker in your main panel.
