Cold water motor skills

I carry those $3.00 ice picks with me whenever I'm on the ice. I'm curious to know whether or not I'd be able to operate the zipper on my pocket where I keep them/pull them apart if I was ever in a jam in the cold water. Anyone have any experience/input on this one?

instead of carrying them in your pockets you should either attach the picks you have with a piece of rope or go get the ones that are connected with the spring cord and wear them around your neck or through your coat sleaves

Hemlock, I think pulling a pair of ice picks out of a zippered pocket while treading 33-degree water would be an admirable accomplishment. If you're going out on questionable ice, I'd hang them around your neck or tie one end to a wrist. Personally, if I went through, I think the panic factor alone would make me forget how a zipper even works. Of course, different people react differently under pressure, but zipping them up doesn;t sound like a great idea.

Hemlock-I sling one end of the loop on top of my left shoulder and the other end under my right armpit and I can fish all day without having the thing get in my way.

A friend of mine had the ones with the plastic cord around his neck and when he went through the force of the water pulled them off and they didn't do him any good. Good thing someone saw him go down to help him out.

If you are venturing out on "iffy" ice, not only is it a good idea to have the picks attached to your wrists, or to your coat sleeves, it is also a VERY good idea to WEAR YOUR LIFEVEST!!! It is just as easy to drown if you fall in during winter as it is during the summer. wink.gif

That's what I do, and thankfully I haven't had to prove myself right. Good luck, don't catch'em all, and be careful! smile.gif

The iffy ice. Life Jacket is certainly not a bad idead, but as far as the ice picks are concerned, I keep em up my sleeves. Before they came out with those things, I used to use and hold hand gaff. Like captain Hook type of gaff. It had a rope tied to it which I put around my wrist and then I stuffed it up my jacket sleeve. Then if I needed it in an emergency(luckily never did), I could just shake my arm and out it would pop. It had a big handle on it too.
I used to practice brandishing it with an arm shake. Like everyone else said, if you can't get to it quickly, there is no point in having it. Take care out there.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
