First Turkey hunt..

The Yeti

Recommended Posts

If I get a permit that is.. This spring, me and my dad will be going on our first Turkey hunt. We plan on doing plenty of research over the winter. Hopefully some scouting in the area we are going to hunt as well..

Yeti:

Stay tuned, as the winter progresses, the talk will start to heat up around here. There's quite a few guys on this board that know what they're doing, and going into your first season there's alot to learn. That's not a bad thing either, as I think that learning/figuring-out alot of this on your own is more than half the fun of the entire experience!

If the plan is to both hunt you should apply as a group. Either you pass together or you fail and then you can get surplus tags.

If you don't mind hunting together but maybe only one of you gets drawn, then apply seperate. If one fails you can still hunt together, only the licensed hunter can shoot though.

Yeah if you apply as a group you both either get a tag or don't.

I'm not sure on the surplus tags but, I think how they work is you can look on the DNR HSOforum after tags have been drawn , and if there is an area with extra unfilled tags you can buy one over the counter and you won't lose your preference point for next year.

Any tags that are not applied for go on sale for hunters who were not drawn. I'm not 100% sure, but I think surplus tags can only be bought by people who applied but were not drawn. The DNR sets a date when they go onsale and provides a list of where and how many are available.

That is correct. You can purchase a surplus in any zone or time period which is still availble. It's first come first serve so be there early if you do get drawn.
