DinkADunk
I don't target Muskie's through the ice. To do justice to the fish you really want to minimize the amount of time the Muskie is out of the hole and you want to make sure their gills don't freeze (i.e. you may want to have some warm water as is 40F or so available and a tarp so you can keep them fairly warm) or sustain other injuries. Unhooking a muskie can be a chore, even with knipex bolt cutters.
muskiedreams
Kinda hard 2 figure 8 in a 10" hole I would not target muskie on the ice. I think if people did we would have alot of dead fish on are hands
cjac
Legislation is pending at the 11th hour on a proposed Dec 1st close, still not signed, but last communication I had was it was on the Governor's desk, whatever that means. Not sure if it'll make it this year, I'll ask again with the DNR rep I last talked to. Bill was to protect 'skis in general and a combination of certain fish in areas that were highly succeptable to being caught and potentially harvested through the ice.Tough to enforce, but I'd think an 11.5 inch sucker on a known muskie lake under a tip-up might constitute "muskie" intent..... RK, have you heard any more, as I'm really echoing what you've told us. Chris
bubs
IF THE LAKE HAS NORTHERNS IN IT PLUS MUSKIES THE ONLY THING YOU CAN ENFORCE IS HARVEST. PROVE IT IN COURT THAT YOU ARE FISHING MUSKIES BEYOUND A REASONABLE DOUBT IS A VERY TOUGH SELL. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SHOW THAT YOU CAUGHT A NORTHERN ON THE SAME PRESENTATION AND YOU HAVE A CASE. I WISH THEY WOULD JUST PUT IN CATCH AND RELEASE AFTER DEC. 1 WITH GLOBAL WARMING THE LAKES WILL BE OPEN TI"LL CHRISTMASS. I AM FOR NOT FISHING THROUGH THE ICE FOR THEM I JUST THINK THAT IT CAN'T BE ENFORCED. BTY THEY USE SMALLER SUCKERS AFTER ICE UP THE SAME SIZE THAT YOU WOULD USE FOR BIGGER PIKE. I KNOW HOW THEY DO IT AND WHERE. THEY ALSO KEEP ANY LEGAL FISH TO EAT. THEY CATCH ALOT OF FISH AND IT SUCKS.
