Norco
I am curious to know if you get gas on your hands from your auger and handle your tackle and bait if this will deter fish such as walleye and perch????
Fishbitten
Without a doubt, I fish with a fella who gas'es up the truck on the way fills his coleman, then the auger on the ice and consistently gets out fished. Use disposable gloves for auger and do all other fueling possible before leaving. Pertain's to open water also.
Crawlerman
You can buy scentless soap that helps get rid of the odor. Generally, washing with even regualr soap and waiting a little bit helps-- fish don't seem to mind the smell of soap as much as gasoline.

Guest
Try to fuel everything up after your trip, and not before, this limits exposure to fuels.A handy thing to have on hand is surgical gloves. Easy to carry and if you need to play with smelly gas you will keep it away from your skin. They are very handy in wet cold conditions and will help to protect you from frost bite. If you need to use your hands to do mechanical work in nasty -0 weather they really come in handy! ------------------Ed "Backwater Eddy" Carlson..><sUMo>Backwater Guiding"Ed on the RED"(701)-281-2300[email protected]http://ed-carlson.fishingbuddy.com
upnorth
I know that there some natural gas( the human form) in a fish house can deter some fishermen. Especially thems that are beer induced
Steve Foss
I figure it must, just based on what I've noticed. Never read about any study backing that up. I know gas smells bad to ME. Hate that smell after it drips from those stupid leaky auger gas caps onto my Trap II. I keep the auger downwind after I'm set up too. When I'm tightening and loosening the cap vent for drilling, I always use the same pair of old leather mittens so I don't get the gas on my hands.[This message has been edited by stfcatfish (edited 01-01-2003).]
Guest
Some use WD-40 to remove the gas scent...I wash my hands with Dawn dish washing detergent and rinse very well after handling gas cans, etc....Seems to work well for me.PCG
Guest
wow, wearing surgical gloves... never thought of that for fishing... I do it during bow season for deer, but never for fishing... What about just covering up by spraying the bait with an attractor scent?? anyone still use those? I never have, but after seeing how some of these negative slow fish on the camera pick at the bait, I'm thinking about trying it...
Guest
Interesting info....for the record, however, I had really bad gas today (too much venison sausage) and still caught a lot of perch on Schroon Lake in the Adirondacks of NYcheersDacker
Guest
We have always noticed that whoever pumped the gas to fill the truck would not catch as many fish as the rest of the group. I always try to wear gloves, but sometimes I still forget. Same applies to filling the gas augers. Preferably use gloves that you will not bring out on the ice with you. Fish On! Guide Service
One of the slickest ways i've found to combat the smell of gas from permeating my hands from opening the valve on the auger cap is to install a 6" piece of rubber hose that fits snug on the valve. No more touching the stinky valve.Stephen

Eyewitness
Can't remember where I read it. In Fish I think, anyway, a study was done on the effect of gas on bass. They put a bunch of bass in an olympic sized pool and let them get somewhat acclimated to it. Then they dropped like two drops(yes drops!) of gasoline in the pool near the end where most of the fish were and they all swam to the far end of the pool immediately. Apparently they tried this over and over and continued to get the same results. I carry the lindy No Scent soap with me on every outing and use it religously. I am confident that it helps eliminate or mask the scent of anything unnatural, especially the human pherimones. They say fish have some of the most powerful noses on the planet. Only makes sense to me.[This message has been edited by Eyewitness (edited 01-02-2003).]
