We were hunting the state blinds starting Thursday evening, all day Friday and Saturday morning. They figure there are only 10-15,000 geese on the lake. Hunting was extremely slow with something like 5 geese taken on Friday. Hoping to get back out there over Thanksgiving and have a few more birds around. Anyone else hunt out there over Thanksgiving? Any idea if the bird numbers are usually up at that time?

Also looking for any recommendations on where to stay in Montevideo. We stayed at the Fiesta City Motel and will not be recommending it to anyone. They charge an extra $10 if you have any kind of dog. And the room was giving my wife the creeps. I wanted to stay at the Viking Motel as I have stayed there before and they were very accomodating and appreciated the business they get from hunters in the area. Anyone have any other good recommendations of where to stay?

I was at the Lac Qui Parle headquartes or Wed. talking to a few people. I couldn't believe at the time the mentioned only around 7,500 geese being around. I thought about trying to get a 2nd drawing blind, as I usually do the 2nd weekend of pheasant hunting, but thought it wouldn't be worth it with that few geese around. You're right though, it will only get better. Thanksgiving weekend should be a great time to e out there with much better numbers. I remember a few years, within the last 7 or so, that there'd be over 100,000 geese on the lake during slug season for deer. It's not what it once was, but they'll be much better numbers then.

Also, maybe take a look at the Prairie's Edge or Prairie's Views hotel with in Appleton, about 10 miles west on 7 from the blinds. Handy location, I think it was a Super 8 or something a few years ago. Can't say anything about the rooms, but a lot of guys were staying there over the pheasant opener.

There is also another little joint West from The Fiesta on 212. They have motel and some small cabins. "Classic" sort of spot, but accomdating.

Yes, the Prairie View in Appleton used to be the Super 8. I've not stayed there, but inside seems nice when I did stop in to let a buddy know how we did.

I think Madison has a decent motel, too.

we stayed at the "old" super 8...last time out there was around 2001 or so. They had decent rooms and everything was clean...your typical low-mid range room.

We used to go out there duck hunting for about 7 years 3 or 4 weekends during the season...last one was about 2001

It was nice, they let dogs in the rooms back then. grin.gif
