Hunting Whitewater

Recommended Posts

I'll be hunting around Altura and Elba this weekend. Good hunting, but you'll need to find landowner permission and that can be a bit tough. I believe the Dorer pools are around the whitewater refuge (not sure) and there's a lot of good hunting there. Not sure on depths. Sorry

You can hunt the Dorer Pools area on foot if you walk out on the dikes. The cannals around the dikes can be too deep to wade with chest waders. The big pools aren't as deep but the bottom is pretty soft. A canoe or kayak works nice out there. Jump shooting from a canoe works well sometimes.

Some people also float down the river or just setup along the river. The current is pretty strong through there so be careful if you try to cross.

This is a good spot for early season wood ducks.

The pools are between Beaver and Weaver along county road 74. The pools closest to Beaver are refuge. The Dorer pools are along the east side of 74. There are several parking lots with access to the dikes and water. Watch for the Open for Public Hunting signs.
