Toshiba Satellite slow start up.

zachp

Question

My toshiba is taking forever to boot up...I turn it on and it takes about 20 minutes before it actually does anything. Once it comes on it performs normally for about a hour and then will freeze up, turn it off and restart the process...does anyone have a clue what would cause this?

Startup programs and malware (spyware, virus, trojans, etc.) most likely.

First thing to do is get CCleaner or similar and clean out all the old temp files (even cleans those hidden IE files) from your computer.

Next, uninstall programs and features you don't use as many of them load things on startup even though you may not be actively using the program.

The first two steps can greatly speed up how long it takes to perform the subsequent malware scans.

Finally, get some software to remove the spyware/malware.

MajorGeeks forum is a good HSOforum for information about removing spyware/malware.

My sister had this same problem on a brand new system. She had made the mistake of installing Norton and McAffee and both were active at the same time. This seemed to bring the machine to its knees. I blew away the old system and re-installed from the original config disk. I then wiped the original version of mcaffee and installed norton. The system seems to work ok now, although it still takes a while to get booted and loaded up. Even brand new it is slower than what I would have expected.

I'll try the cleaner and see if it gets better...I deleted almost everything I don't use and I haven't installed anything recently. I'll check on the norton antivirus thing.

Mike I'll be back in MN on thursday...i'll give the above things a try and if I can't get it to work i'll give you a hollar, Thanks.
