You should get yourself a PRIM map (public recreation information map) from the DNR for the Aitkin area. You can order them over the phone from the St. Paul office. Or buy a plat map of your area. You should be able to find lots of public land. My Duluth PRIM map ends just west of Cromwell and the next block west of there is listed as the Aitkin map.

I live close to moose willow better for ducks than deer but there is alot of public land around this area you can almost go anywhere and find public land. I don't know if you've been to moose willow but it is closer to Hill City than Aitkin. It's about five miles south of Hill City and about thirty miles north of Aitkin. Get a map as there is federal, state, and Blandin land everywhere.

I'm not familiar with that area but there is the Savanna state forest north and south of 210 by Tamarack. It's also all around by Big Sandy lake looks like plenty of room for many hunters. There is also some tax forfeit and state land around that area. If you need more specific info I'll try to figure more out as I have a friend familiar with the area.

thanks so much i really appreciate what you are doing. i am 90% sure that i will hunt in the savanna state forest around moose willow. so if you ask your friend i want to know if there are deer hunters in the area and even if there is deer around this state forest. i downloaded google earth and it shows aerial photos of the land, and i have also been looking at the dnr HSOforum for specific details. thanks again eric anderson

The Savanna state forest is huge. I'm not sure where the best spot is but I'm pretty sure if you head north towards the Jacobson area there are less hunters. I have many friends that hunt on land around that area and they're are plenty of deer and they have taken some nice bucks. Just like anywhere else if you get in the woods a little bit further you probably have a better chance due to less pressure. If you dont have much time to scout I would look for areas with water that will naturally funnel deer. It also always seems that there is plenty of thick stuff around the water where they have a good place to hide. Clear cuts work good but everybody seems to be there. I will check some topos and look for some areas to look at for you.
