Bigbartguy
hi folksIs it time for winterizer/crabgrass preventer to go down?thanks!
LwnmwnMan2
No reason to put crabgrass preventer down, crabgrass will freeze out when it gets cold, and the chemical will be gone before it has any effect next spring.I know there's guys that do it, swear by it, but I personally don't see any gain from it.Winterizer, about another 2 weeks, especially if this weather keeps up, unless you haven't put any down all year, then you're probably good. Make sure it's not alot of N, especially if it doesn't have any slow release in it. Last thing you want is your top growth growing like mad into an early season snowfall. IFallsRon
I looked at a bag today and it said that you can apply from August until frost. What was in the bag that 30 years ago you could lay down during halftime of a football game?
FishingIdiot
Update - with this new cooler weather, does that mean that it is time to put it on or still wait a few more weeks?
LwnmwnMan2
Go ahead
Bigbartguy
Lawnman - thanks for your response. do you have any recommendations for winterizer? Most of the chain stores just have high Nitrogen-types, at least that I could find. I've been to the Lesco in Brooklyn Park before but it'd be a bit difficult to get there before application time
LwnmwnMan2
Some guys will recommend a higher N, I personally don't like an overabundance of it. I'll run a 10-0-20, a 12-0-12, something along those lines.I know of guys that will run a 30-0-10 and swear by it, but .... I guess sometimes you have to somewhat work with your own properties as well, in how you maintain them, what your fertilizing schedule was throughout the entire year, etc.
hoggs222
Do you usually want to have all of the leaves bagged before applying this? I have been keeping up with them, so there's not a whole lot left.
