Acorn crop up nort

Recommended Posts

Mostly out of curiousity, anyone have any reports on the acorn crop up north? I've been hunting some public land east of Eau Claire and the amount and size of the acorns there is absolutely obnoxious. Its been raining acorns from a week before opener and still was this past weekend. On the other hand an area I hunt south of Eau Claire has nothing special for acorns this year - different soil and habitat but certainly not the crop of acorns like out in the 'big woods'.

Acorns were raining down all weekend by Yellow Lake. Deer were moving like crazy from 4pm to dark Fri, but the wind kept them down until right at dark Sat. Managed to get the boat lifts and docks out between the raindrops Sat morning. All in all a pretty nice weekend in the woods. Just remind me not to head out to the stand at 1 in the afternoon, when the winds are howling like they were. I saw my first deer at 7:03 Sat night.

Flatlander, you got a place on Yellow? Any walleye action out there lately? Last couple times I was out, even the locals had quit fishing it.

Sorry to stray from the post...

Speaking of acorns it reminds me of the 'myth' of 'acorn fat' - the soft and moist sections of fat you find after getting the guts out....the stuff that turns hard after you let a deer hang that you can then just grab and pull out. I wonder if that is indeed acorn related or just a sign of a healthy, well-fed deer? I know the doe fawn I shot last Fri had that 'acorn fat' and for such a young deer in a non-ag area if it wasn't the abundant acorns I'm not sure what would be the source of that fat, wouldn't think just browse?

No such luck. I hunt my buddy's land. As far as fishing, there were a fair number of guys out fishing Sat. There were a few boats on either side of the channel(by Yellow Lake Lodge), that I'm guessing were fishing walters. I only ice fish Yellow.
