I hunted my "cabin stand" on Friday night. we have 11 acres that is part lakeshore, part woods, and part swamp where we built a cabin last year, and I planted food plots in a way to try and get deer within shooting distance of the cabin. (easier than climbing up a tree) It worked! We had a SE wind on Friday night which is perfect for this setup, so istead of driving up the driveway to the cabin I parked on the road and snuck around a big hill to the north, then snuck quietly into the cabin. I have a food plot that is about 100 yards long by 20 feet wide, with an irrigated 30X30 patch (rapeseed)that is within 30 yards of the window I planned to shoot out of. The deer had hammered my plot a couple times already, but we had gotten rain and some sun so it grew back a bit. We had a good freeze the night before so I figured they would be coming for it. just after sunset (over the lake :-) 2 fawns and a doe came grazing up the plot, and I took this doe at 27 yards. The Grim Reaper did it's job, she went about 100 yards before expring. Now it's time to wait for a buck.

I made it out again yesterday with a buddy of mine set up in two trees right next to eachother trying to get some footage. We were hanging in the tree by 6:30am and sat quietly for about an hour and a half when I saw a patch of brown maybe 60-70 yards out. Wind was perfect and it looked to be a nice looking doe and a fawn. She just wouldn't come close enough for a shot. She was within 40 yards at one point but too much brush in the way. I had a couple shooting lanes in which she moved very fast through one at 40 yards. She moved off quite aways only to turn back around and start moving back towards us right on the trail where we walked in. The fawn was in the kill zone but I decided to let her walk. Needless to say eventually that doe walked right down wind from us and she turned back around and moved off fairly quickly. It is always fun to have deer around you and she even looked right up at us and kept browsing on forage un alarmed. That is when you know you are well camo'd. As the doe kept moving towards us she eventually was directly down wind and caught our scent, rounded up her little one and got the heck out of there. We sure had fun waiting for the shot and just watching the deer move throughout their normal habitat unalarmed!!! I also really enjoy having a friend with to hunt alongside as it really helps pass the down time and to have your hunts filmed is even more fun to watch later on and in the off-season. You can really learn from them. The next hunt I hope we get a kill on film!!!
