Sub 40 on a stringer

Anyone notice the Muskie on a stringer in the back of the Outdoor News, I know the kid was exited and probably wanted to keep it but the law is the law and I really don't understand the motivation for them to print this fish(obviously dead,)all it does in condone this type of illegal harvest.

Nope, woman lake in cass county has a 48" minimum size. That isn't a legal fish. Too bad they stringered it, death for sure. Hopefully they just snapped a pic and the kid needed something to hang onto so they went through the bottom jaw, but I still don't think that is legal.

I saw that, but I know that some lakes have a 30" minimum. I'll check it out, but it may be shoepac strain.

Where? Certainly not in MN.

I just read the regs. There is not a lake in the state with a minimum length under 40".

If it was in MN, that is an illegal fish

Well, there is an exception to every rule. Shoepack Lake in Voyageur's National Park was once a broodstock for muskie, and as most of you musky nuts know, has not been stocked since 1982 when it was discovered that this strain of fish grows very slow. At Shoepack lake, the minimum size is 30".

However, since the Outdoor News Photo was from Boy lake or wherever, it was a sublegal fish.

For some reason, Shoepack is not listed in the Regs. It is still 30". I'll send an email to see why its not listed in the regs...it is listed on their HSOforum when you look at the musky management page

That stinks! Congrats to the kid on the fish, but I wish they would have handled the situation a little better. confused.gif Anyhow there are a few exceptions as was mentioned shoepac is an exception here on the Kabetogama Penninsula. Also the Bigfork and Littlefork rivers up here used to be an exception up until this year when the switched the regs and minimum lengths on them. It's just too bad. confused.gif
