First Walleye - on an Angel Eye

Just a quick report on my weekend - went to Miltona and Minnewaska on Saturday. Hit Miltona at sunrise and worked the west end drop-off with the pink/glow Angel eye and minnow-head and caught my first 'eye through the ice!! Went on to get 3 more at Minnewaska(Starbuck end) in the evening. The Angel Eyes and AE Jrs did great - had lots of strikes. No other lure I tried produced.

Awesome lure!! Great way to start this season.

It just don't get no better than that does it. I used them for the first time my last trip to LOW last March. I just recieved two cards of the Glow Devils and will be giving those a test this weekend. Glad you had some luck, you're hooked now, no pun intended. Bill

my first time out i got skunked using a glow angel eye, my 8 year old brother caught 12 walleyes using a jigging rap, and he was fishing right near me. he is always really good at catching the fish but i thought that was really weird. i caught one walleye n that was on a plain hook. i haven't been won over on alot of this stuff but who knows alot more outtings to go, n i got a whole card of these things.

I had a tough time finding the angel eye lures, but glad I did.

They work great on perch too. Tip with a fathead minnow (head) or a shiner head.

Don't give up on them to early.

Fished LOW the 5th. Used my regular jig to start and did catch some fish. Then switched to an Angel Eye Jr. and caught a fish almost every time it went into the water. Figure I caught over 100 fish that day. Last year I got skunked using the AE. Then I read up on it and how to fish the thing - it works for me! Took home some nice walleyes and sauger. I have never caught so many fish in one day in my life. smile.gif

Sticka: Like any other spoon, tip the Angel Eye or Jr. with a minnow head and raise it and let if flutter down.

Thing about the A.E. is it's soo thin and light (yup, takes awhile to get way down deep if you're fishing way down deep) that it seesaws down slowly, which triggers aggressive and neutral fish.

I doubt you were fishing it wrong when your buddy outfished you with the Jiggin Rap. Fish just wanted the Rap that day.

And that's a good lesson. There's been a love fest going on over the A.E. on this forum for quite awhile, spurred on by excellent success at URL, especially last year. Don't get me wrong. A.E.s are really good baits, and you should have some of them. But some days other baits will outproduce them, and you just gotta go with the flow.

I always start with an aggressive bait, like a heavy Northland Rattle Spoon or a Nils Master Jigger Shad, each tipped with a minnow head. If that brings fish in but they won't bite, then I go more subtle, and the A.E. is high up on the list of subtle flutter baits.

Tell you what,
I sure do love these to bring em in.

That flutter makes the Angel and minnow look just like a wounded minnow if you jig it right. Very slow slight jigging up and flutter down, just like a minnow struggling.

Few fish can resist wounded prey.

stfcatfish, if you use the regular Angel Eye, it has a surprisingly fast drop for deeper water.

The Angel Jr's are good down to 30 feet at a slower but ok rate of drop.
