Euros or waxies?

When I'm on the ice, there's about a 99% chance I have both. They're not that expensive and when I get out on the ice I want to have whichever bait is working better on that spot at that time.

Okay, this is going to sound stupid, but what is Euro larvae? I've heard all of you guys talking about them, but I'm wondering if they are what bait shops in my area call "spikes" (which look like regular housefly maggots to me and are available in both natural and a pink or reddish color).

Fargin, euoro larvae is just a user friendly word for "Maggot". They have been a favorite live bait in europe for a long time. So that is how they marketed them over here. European larva hahaha. They get all the different colors by feedin' them dyed meat. yummmm.
I like waxies, but "maggies" are cheaper. I use both for panfish.

I remember when "eurolarvea" first came out, I bought a tin of em for icefishin'. They worked good, but I only used half of them. I didn't yet know what they were at the time. I forgot to take em out of my pocket and found em a week later and they were all brown and dry. I figured they were dead and tossed em in the garbage can in my room.
Well a few days later we had these huge houseflies buzzin' around the house and my mother askin' where they came from! : shocked.gif:

Cyberfish, I had a similar experience happen with the flies a few years back. I tossed the dead larvae out in the garbage in the garage and soon I had flies all over the place. I was trying to figure out how the heck these flies got here during the winter. Then a buddy of mine asked where I throw my dead maggots and sure enough that was the case.

Good Fishin, Matt.

Euro Larvae is my preferred choice. Closer resembles natural forage. Last longer on the hook. I've used both but have more success with euro's.

I usually start with spikes (reds if I can find them), but I always have waxies with me. Cornborers are supposed to be good, I've never had much luck with them.

Thanks for the explanation, Cyberfish! I figured it was just a fancy name for maggots, but like I said, everyone around here calls them spikes. I notice the dyed ones don't seem to live nearly as long as the natural-colored ones. They are about the same price as waxies around here, and I usually have both when I go out. The spikes stay on the hook better, but sometimes I can't buy a bite on them and other times it's vice versa. We try to have plenty of minnies (for crappies and perch) and wigglers onhand too. Ever have a 28"+ northern pike hit a waxie on a tiny panfish rod spooled with 1-lb mono? Now THAT'S FUN! Clear the shanty and make sure your drag is set right!!!

I usually start with 2-3 spikes on my hook with one of them being red. If the fish seem finicky and want a slower/fatter presentation, then I will switch to a waxie that I hook like a twister tail jig so it hangs horizontal (if you use a fatboy or other horizontal jig). The presentation is juicier and falls slower due to the size of the waxie. Sometimes that waxie will significantly out fish the spikes. One nice thing about the spikes is that they will wiggle for a long time whereas the waxie normally dies off pretty quick, especially the way that I hook it.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
