Question about boots?

EXTREME

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about purchasing some of those Muck Brand boots. How does everyone out there like theirs? How warm are they? It is either the Muck boots or some 1000 gram thinsulate rubber boots. My only concern is warmth. I like to hunt in late October and even December and am concerned about warmth. Cann someone out there give me their opinion on the Muck boots? Thanks!!

extreme- here is some info for you. I was the footwear manager and trainer for a large outdoor retail store for 5 years. I can tell you this about muck boots. the woody max and artic sport or the warmest ones they make. comfort rating -50. i can tell you from experience sitting still you are lucky to see +20 to + 25 if you are still hunting for long periods of time. that would be with the best Merino wool socks and liner.here is a simple thing to help out if you ever want warmth factors think of this if the rating is -50 take off 60 to 70 degrees if sitting still for long periods of time. take off 100 degrees if not more for your exterme weather boots. at -20 not much is going to keep you warm. they are scent proof but it is still a good idea not to walk through mcdonald's in the morning. i spray mine with white lightning by scent blocker works great. i wear mine alot when i am moving they are great. a way you can boost the rating is with a piece of 6mm or 9mm felt insoles and slide those under the insole that is exsisting. it will lift you up and add another layer of warmth under your feet. the biggest piece of advise i could give you is if you don't already use merino wool socks or angora rabbit fur socks. they maximize warmth and wick the mositure off keeping you drier longer. if you want suggestions on good ones let me know. i hope this helps

frozencat, I've always shook my head at those -xxx ratings as far as low temps, all it takes is one time with cold feet at +20 degrees, 70 degrees above their ratings, to know that they're blowing smoke.

extreme, I'm not that big of a believer in rubber boots, I just wear my hunting boots and work my way heavier, from 400 grams thinsulate to 1200 grams thinsulate boots by mid November. After that, I usually wear my La Crosse Ice Kings, best warm weather boots I've ever had. Also the advice on wool socks is right on, and I'd like to add that polypro liner socks are great too.

Thanks for all the advice...I guess what I really want to know is: are the Muck boots warmer than say a 1000 gram Alpha Burly boot? I know that they are lighter, but am wondering about the warmth factor as compared to other boots. Blackjack....I know your stance on rubber boots(have read about them in prior posts), I agree that Ice kings are awesome. I have a pair. The only thing that sucks about them is that they are huge and heavy....but very warm. Pick your poisen.

Ive owned the woodymax Mucks for 4 years now. In my opinion they are the best bow hunting boots made.... period. My feet have never been cold in them. I use them in the winter a lot ice fishing too. I hardly even wear my Icekings anymore.
