advice/suggestions for asking price on boat and trailer

i'm planning on selling a 1956 16ft. 1/4" fiberglass fishing boat. the make and model (at this time) are still unknown. the trailer was handmade my late uncle in 1982. both the boat and trailer are in good shape. the trailer has a lifetime license. the boat is currently registered through '09. i would be selling it without a motor.

any suggestions on asking price? all advice welcome. thanks.

That is kind of a tough one, Mike. Your first step might be to take some pictures of it, post it, and see if anyone can tell what kind of boat it is.

Second, I'd put it on HSOList. Take a bunch of pictures, write up a good, honest description and see what happens.

i'm going to put it on hsolist first. i'm definitely going to take some pictures. i figure $200 wouldn't be out of the questions. once i get some pictures taken i'll upload them on to here... maybe that'll help.

i had recently looked into that but was unable to make any posts in the classified section on this HSOforum. it appears as if you need to sign up and pay a fee in order to post. is this correct?

Yes you need to pay to post there. It's a pretty small fee though. Goes off what your asking price is.

One thing that you might want to take into consideration is how much are you willing to settle for the final price of the item. Asking too high and people will not be interested and asking too low will be a loss to you.

You would be selling your boat w/o the motor so that would definitely be something a person would try to negotiate for a lower price.

Place your price slightly higher than you want it to be and let the person buying it make the price. However, if he/she "low-balls" you with the price then tell them to hit the road.

Also one final point, act like you're not interested in the offering price eventhough it may be the right price, that way you might get a better bonus and a few more buck in your pocket.

Go to your local boat dealer and see what they have for sale comparable to the boat you have. Granted, a 16' Fiberglas fishing boat may be hard to find. But you will see that if the boat floats and the trailer rolls down the road, its probably worth more than $200. Good luck
